2024 update! New piano tutorials and sheet music coming soon: emergencypianohotline.com
this sounds like the music from studio ghibli movies.. so beautiful
I was thinking the same :)
I had the same thought!
Yep, the intro/outro was totally inspired by that 😄
Hah, I knew it! Anyway, it's perfect. Congrats!
Thanks 😄
You have such a beautiful music taste and such a beautiful way of composing... hope David can hear this on mars
Thanks so much for the kind words 😄
me too. R.I.P david bowie
reading this legit almost made me cry
same oml
So cute , your comment :)
This cover sounds like the soul of Bowie has performed for us one last time.
Glad you enjoyed the track 😄
Gahddamn man 😭 it does.
So true …
David Bowie's music was never quite my thing. But god damn this song has some of the most beautiful chord progressions I've ever heard in it. That E7 in the chorus hurts my feelings in the best possible way every time it hits
not to be THAT kind of fan, but there's always something for someone when it comes to bowie. his discography is soo diverse, i swear. maybe you just haven't found the right song lol
Getting Spirited Away vibes from the beginning
The intro was totally inspired by those tracks 😄
Ahh thought so! Great rendition of a great song, wouldn't have imagined it was possible to infuse David Bowie and Studio Ghibli!
It's funny, I wasn't initially thinking of it, but it came out that way upon reflection. Glad you enjoyed it! 😄
Sounds like Eric Satie
my tears started pouring at about 3:06. This was brilliant tribute to the starman himself ✨
Thanks so much, Vielka. Glad you enjoyed the track 😄
oh ya, and the buildup surprise leading into it, that's the moment right there!

...if there is such a thing
I’ve been doing some thinking recently about this channel and a thought popped into my mind overnight. It’s been a really interesting journey sharing my love of the piano with everyone all over the world. It still trips me out that I spend an afternoon recording a track (it has to be the afternoon for those curious about the process, as the piano is lit by natural light - it’s best between 1pm - 4pm in the room that I’m recording in), sitting by myself in front of a piano in my music school, and that people from all over the world get to experience a very private moment of my creative process.
What I find particularly interesting though is when I listen back to these interpretations, there’s a pretty strong disconnect between playing/recording the tracks and hearing them back. Without a drop of ego, I personally enjoy listening to these tracks either late at night to help me fall asleep, occasionally in the morning when I wake up to find some more motivation about working on my Radiohead songbook, but my favourite time would definitely be when I’m travelling, especially in airports or on planes, and also on public transport. As there are a lot of returning subscribers and listeners on this channel, my question to you is this: Where and when do you listen to these tracks? What are you doing? Working? Studying? Travelling? Eating breakfast? Passing out? What time of day is it? What do you see? How does it make you feel?
I’d be very curious to hear your thoughts, so hit me up.
As always, thanks for supporting the channel and for incorporating this music into your lives. Man, the internet blows my mind sometimes x
I've always been a fan of the piano, even though I cannot play it myself. Right now, I am listening to all your tracks while doing a little bit of post-dinner studying and review. Thank you for sharing your work here Josh.
Hey Nicholas, thanks for the insight. Awesome to hear. Glad you're enjoying the tracks 😄
Greetings from Mexico, Josh .
It´s amazing how beautiful this sound is, it helps me to relax after a log day of school, so I get home and start doing hw with your songs.
Muchas gracias 😃
Wow, just listened to Great Gig in the Sky and now this, your work is incredible. So far I'm too mesmerized by your fingers to do anything but stare!!! Truly a gifted musician, thank you for sharing your work.
This is so good I nearly cried...
More Bowie please!
I'm sure there'll be some more Bowie in the not-too-distant future 😄
SAME
i did cry
And me. Absolutely beautiful.
me too ;)(
This song reminds me of my dad. He would text me every morning saying ground control to major tom. I miss him more and more everyday. Being 20 without him sucks so much. Thank you for this amazing song
I'm so sorry
I lost my dad at the same age and he loved Bowie too. Hang in there.
Thanks guys, I was 15 at the time when he passed. Sophomore year as a high schooler. I’m doing great now tho, I appreciate you guys!!
Your intros are so pretty. I love them.
Thanks so much. Glad you're enjoying them! 😄
Agreed. This one caught me particularly off-guard and hit me right in the gut.
@@evantapper5924 Yeah, right in the feelings!
I get a newfound appreciation for the originals through your interpretations. It's so cool to be able to see the chord progression unfold. Excellent cover!
Thanks so much. Awesome to hear that you're enjoying the interpretations. Appreciate the support! 😄
This is probably my tenth time listening to this and it still gives me chills. I love Bowie's music and this rendition is beautiful
This came on in autoplay whilst I was working and it caught my attention. Great work. Really passionate playing.
the transition from the intro to the verse is so perfect great cover
Thanks very much. Glad you enjoyed it! 😄
Love this interpretation of a classic track!! Thank you so much, Josh!!
I just love how you use the silences in this song... !
Kudos to your beautiful work
Hey Josh, just want to let you know that your covers bring tears to my eyes. They're absolutely beautiful, you definitely understand what the artist wanted to say via their music and you present it so beautifully. Thank you for this.
Oh god more Bowie please! I vote for either Life on Mars or Sons of the Silent Age
Thanks for the requests! I'm sure there'll be some more Bowie soon 😄
Life On Mars, please ! :O
Yep, it's on my list 😄
Josh Cohen Yaaaaaay !!!
+Josh Cohen It would be wonderful if you did Aladdin Sane by Bowie.
I have been looking for some inspiration on how this song can be played and I mostly play on the guitar...but hearing this arrangement...it is so breathtaking. Beautiful and inspiring. Thank you Josh, for giving the world the pleasure of hearing this rendition.
This seriously moved me to tears in the first 30 seconds. The song is already incredible on its own, but you added a touch of haunting beauty. Thank you so much for this cover.
David Bowie was a musical genius. Josh Cohen arranged and played his music masterfully. Thank you.
THIS IS GROUND CONTROL TO MAJOR TOM
You've reall made the grade...
AND THE PAPERS WANT TO KNOW WHO'S SHIRT YOU WEAR
This is major tom to ground control
I’m stepping through the dooor and I’m floating in the most peculiar way
And the stars look very different todaaayyy
I love the view of the hands. It's mesmerizing and I'm learning.
its midnight and i was sad so i started listening to this song as its my favorite then i was really intrigued by the thought of it being played on a piano and i must say this is the best one i’ve heard you did an amazing job and made me feel a lot better so thank you
I always said, I always say and I always will say until my last day that piano music is the most beautiful sound you can hear in this life!! It always make me cry!!
I'm listening approximately at 1am in my room after a long afternoon piano training... Now it's more then midnight and i'm gonna emerge into the seaseness flow of the sparkling notes... Thank you for your geniueness, it inspired me a lot, so gratefully!
WoW! Just wow!!!!
On se fait emporter par votre façon de jouer, c'est parfait. On retrouve l'émotion de cette chanson on imagine presque David BOWIE Chanter. Infiniment merci quel bonheur. Fabrice.
amazingly heavenly Bowie cover!... do Starman or Where Are We Now next!
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the requests 😄
Five Years would be a powerful one too.
Where Are We Now would be terrific!
Little behind the other listeners, maybe by five years or so, but for what it's worth, I concur. Don't know if I'm imagining a far eastern influence blending perfectly through this, but who cares - it's beautiful. Thank you for sending me into space.
Glad you enjoyed the ride x
Jesus....I can't stop crying. This is such a beautiful interpretation.
This is a beautiful rendition. Thank you for sharing!
Gives me goosebumbs, amazing!
I've been listening around mid-day while at work. Currently it is my lunch break. I'm just munching and listening to you on headphones. Your works are both familiar and new. I don't find myself thinking of the lyrics really, just hearing the melodies and sometimes being surprised when a new progression appears or does not appear at an expected time.
The works are very relaxing and calming. Sunlight is blasting in my office window, which seems appropriate. So, I'm seeing a lot of light. I really like the black and white video style and the exposed frame of the piano.
I'm just really appreciating what you have given to the world and hoping to be able to contribute a similar sort of peace in my life
fabulous!!! amazing cover
Breathtaking... thank you for sharing your amazing talent.
great arrangement!
Hello! I’m a fairly new subscriber and my love of Bowie brought me here and I have been pondering your questions since I read it a while back. To finally answer, I listen to this literally always. There is just so much range to this channel that I can listen to it when I’m sad or happy or just bored. I listen when I study, when I work, when I draw, when I play video games, when I work out, in class, in the car, literally anywhere. I love what you do on this channel and I can’t wait to see what more comes of it. ❤️
Thanks so much, Braden. Really appreciate the support ✌️
Beautiful rendition, thanks...
Stunning!
Brilliant, as always! Thanks for playing our beloved Bowie
You're welcome, Ana. Thanks for watching and supporting the channel! 😄
My pleasure
RUclipsrs like you truly make my day, you know... That same old day, with something suddenly to look forward to.
Awesome to hear that you're enjoying the clips. It's a pretty surreal experience recording these tracks at my music school and then hearing back from people like yourself all over the world. Still trips me out everyday.
I’m in awe! This is amazing
I listen to this one while I'm at work, makes me feel very relaxed, as your other interpretations do, also very inspired to continue my piano lessons :) keed sharing your music to the world, thanks!
cuantos artistas nos han dejado legados tan preciados y ya no están..... quizás sigan componiendo en el mas allá quien sabe !!! mientras tanto es un gusto poder disfrutar de este regalo Gracias Bowie
Muchas gracias, Rafa 😄
Absolutely beautiful! Thanks for sharing this with us all, it is such a joy to listen! I'd love to hear "A Day In the Life" if possible! Cheers from Denver!
Thanks for the request, Colin. Appreciate the support 😄
I can’t even describe how beautiful this is. Thanks for sharing.
Fantastic........congrats Josh!!!!
Emocionantes tus interpretaciones; en este caso, para mí, que soy un gran admirador de Bowie , me siento muy satisfecho y agradecido...
Mucho éxito y felicidad para ti !
Thank you! That was beautiful!
You're welcome! Thanks for watching 😄
beautifully done mate....absolutely love this revision you have done here...
I grew up to my dad singing and playing this song on repeat, so you know what, I'm learning this song and I'm going to play it to him when he's next round for dinner. Thanks for the great memory provoking moment you played it beautifully and made me happy and inspired me to get me oldman singing again. Hears to people who never give-up and inspire people daily PEACE & LOVE to you all 🌍
Growing up I never listened to David Bowie on any level, however I have recently gained a huge interest in his personal life ,and while the original is great, this cover gave me an emotional response I haven't experienced years. The long build up leading to 3:06 actually came close to making me cry.
That's so interesting. But do you like this song, the regular version? I find it one of the best songs in the world
@@AliceP. Hey super late reply, but yes I love the original.
However the point I made was that my interest was very short and rapidly focused on Bowie, personally I don't know how a single song by someone I never listened to until then was able to elicit such an emotional reaction.
Yours is my favourite cover of this piece, Josh. 👌
Thanks, Luke ✌️
I can't stop playing this. It's make me feel calm and relaxed. Amazing.....
Love your technique/tone!!!
You've done it again- I'm crying at how beautiful this is. Please could you do ashes to ashes, I'd love to see if the range of parts can fit into a piano cover. Also wish you were here by pink floyd would be amazing; you excel at conveying emotion within a song in your covers and wish you were here is so emotional, I'm sure you'd produce a brilliant cover. Thanks so much for this.
You're welcome, Emily. Thanks for the kind words and the requests. I'm sure I'll get around to covering some Floyd in the not-too-distant future. Glad you're enjoying the music 😄
Wow, you play Bowie too?? Man this channel has evolved into an actual heaven 😂 this has to be one of my favorite arrangements you've done. (totally unrelated note: I hope videotape makes it into the songbook)
Glad you enjoyed the cover. I'm not sure if Videotape will make it into the songbook. I've got to look at the arrangement first and see if it's suitable 😄
I absolutely love each piano piece you do -- the vibes it gives is amazing and I listen to them on a weekly basis. Please continue to do more
Thanks very much ✌️
This version is absolutely gorgeous!!
God damn dude you play so well it makes me cry.
Awesome. Glad you're enjoying the music 😄
Oh Josh, how beautiful is this? I just had to keep listening after I experienced your Pink Floyd cover. I LOVE David Bowie and this is an absolutely fabulous and refreshingly original interpretation of his genius work :-) Just curious if this is all improv or a combination of more structured ideas with improv thrown in. I do a lot of that .....cryptic notes and sometimes I structure, sometimes just freeform improv. I really respect what you are doing here and think you are just great!!! The way you simulated those spaceship sounds with that rumbling bass was genius! You play with a superior technique....great mastery and most importantly....PASSION!!! Without passion, notes are just notes :-) BRAVO Josh! ~Jackie
Hey Jackie, thanks again for the kind words. Most of these covers are heavily improvised. There's the basic structure of the tune, but I'm approaching it from more of a jazz/improvisational perspective. I'll eventually release some content explaining the process in more depth 😄
You are most welcome Josh! In any event, you are a wonderful musician and really doing a great job here at your channel. I really LOVE what you do! Hope you had a great weekend :-) ~Jackie
Jackie Perks - Classical Jams I too also came from his Pink Floyd cover
Josh Cohen hey just wondering i absolutely love your rendition of this song and would be hugely appreciative if you made a tutorial
Absolutely stunning, seriously. Thank you for this.
Superb. David Bowie's chords and harmonies- unusual and beautiful
U have very delicate touch😊shy yet strong fingers🤗
Thanks very much, Larysa. Glad you enjoyed the track 😃
Man, I have no words! Your 'Ghibli style' is awesome... I'd love to see you cover for One Summer's Day from Spirited Away
Glad you enjoyed the track. It wasn't the intention and not sure why it came out this way, but I must have been listening to something in a similar vein recently. Glad you enjoyed the track! 😄
Major Tong would be proud. Such a nice cover tribute. David would be shedding a tear up in heaven. RIP. Thank you Josh..............
I love this performance! Excelent!
Are you playing this by heart? without notes in front of you? That’s incredible. Your talent is out of this world🤯😳😱👽🥰
They’re all played by ear, but also sometimes with a lead sheet to guide me ✌️
I love this cover. It really is amazing. Should do more Bowie. Also I think you would kill some System of a Down covers. Great work! Cheers!
Meraviglioso!
Bloody brilliant. Made my day.
Would you consider doing any Pink Floyd?
I'm keen to cover a Floyd tune. Just working out which one would be most suitable to start off with 😄
Nah the entirety of Atom Heart Mother
jamie you read my mind. One of my favourites and I'd love to see Josh's interpretation of it.
Cool, I'll check it out 😄
Josh Cohen it's a long one but enjoy
Gosh !! Dude you are so talented !!!!!
Thanks very much, Victoria. Appreciate you taking the time to check out the clip 😄
This is beautiful! and an amazing version of the song. To be honest I wasn't even into Space Oddity until I heard your version. Thank you! I could listen to this version anywhere, at any time. But when I first heard it...I closed my eyes and lay back on my couch!...Bliss! I especially love your introduction!
Amazing! Thanks for that!
Wow just wow. "This is Ground Control to Major Cohen, you really made the grade! And RUclips wants to know who's shirt you wear!!!" that was awesome!!!
Haha, that is too funny. I do like the fact that I don't have to worry about my facial expressions when I'm playing. Makes it so much easier to focus on the music..
Josh Cohen that's one less thing you have to worry about! you do awesome work, keep doing what you do!
Haha thanks so much, that's the plan! 😄
⚠️ WARNING ⚠️ the contents of this piano cover channel are highly addictive viewer discretion is advised
Turd
white keys so tru 😂
Sooooooo beautiful. No words
Astonishing. Absolutely beautifle. Keep up the good work
I've never clicked on a link faster
Thanks for watching, Aleks! 😄
Ground Control to Major Tom
Ground Control to Major Tom
Take your protein pills and put your helmet on
Ground Control to Major Tom (ten, nine, eight, seven, six)
Commencing countdown, engines on (five, four, three)
Check ignition and may God's love be with you (two, one, liftoff)
This is Ground Control to Major Tom
You've really made the grade
And the papers want to know whose shirts you wear
Now it's time to leave the capsule if you dare
"This is Major Tom to Ground Control
I'm stepping through the door
And I'm floating in a most peculiar way
And the stars look very different today
For here
Am I sitting in a tin can
Far above the world
Planet Earth is blue
And there's nothing I can do
Though I'm past one hundred thousand miles
I'm feeling very still
And I think my spaceship knows which way to go
Tell my wife I love her very much she knows
Ground Control to Major Tom
Your circuit's dead, there's something wrong
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you "Here am I floating 'round my tin can
Far above the moon
Planet Earth is blue
And there's nothing I can do"
♥️
I really really loved your cover ! excellent!!!
Outstanding! Thanks for sharing.
jfc dude why dont your videos get more attention this shits good
It's all good. Not here for the fanfare - I just enjoy playing music 😄
so... how long did this take to create???
and I listened to this because I got distracted from uni homework and becoming obsessed with classical music and classical covers of my favorite popular songs, and this is now one of them 😍
Just, beautiful. Thank you sir
What a breathtaking performance. Wow!
What a good news this morning! Josh Cohen made another great piano cover! I love the intro... I hoped you would do some other intros like you did for Paranoid Android.
Thanks, Alex. Glad you enjoyed the rendition. Appreciate the support! 😄
I wonder if this is not your best cover, but I hesitate precisely with Paranoid Android. I had a special crush on Pyramid Song and Svefn-g-Englar too, simply because I love those songs. Can't wait for The Rainbow ;-)
It's so funny that I've been receiving requests for The Rainbow. One of my closest friends has been on about it for the past month. Kinda tripped him out a bit that people had been requesting it, when we were using it for a reference for an album that we are working on at the moment. Thanks for the request! 😄
I was wondering if you planned on doing anymore Bowie stuff, would you consider doing a cover of rock and roll suicide. I think it would sound amazing on piano.
The passage before the chorus is so great.
You did such a AMAZING cover of this song!!
Tears are literally rolling done my cheeks into my beard.
Josh, sir.
Can you make music sheets for your bowie and radiohead interpretations? Ill buy. Please make easy version as I'm relatively new but inspired by you
So beautiful
Absolutely fantastic. Did you find sheet music for this, as this is something i would love to learn, or did you come up with the arrangement yourself? Either way, fantastic job!
These arrangements are all done by ear unfortunately, so there isn't any sheet music. You can read more about the process here: joshcohenmusic.com/pianocovers 😄
Is it sacrilegious to say that I love this more than the original? God bless.
You probably know that the seats in the balcony section of theaters are referred to as _the gods._ No one is cheering Josh on more than David.
Forgive my ignorance, I actually didn't know that, Daniel... mythical is the territory Josh's rendition of this song takes me to. As you might suggest, the Stardust God is looking down from the Olympian ampitheatre with great approval. Listening to JC playing is a heavenly experience, and it'd be something else to hear it live one day.
@@ursamajor5107 There's a line from, a really great line from an even better movie, "What do you want to know, a day without death?" It's from the movie _Risen_ (2016). Clavius, a centurion present at Christ's crucifiction, is saddled with the unenviable task of debunking the myth surrounding Christ's resurrection and is surprised to find Jesus alive and well, he follows him. He wakes up early one morning and sees Jesus who apparently doesn't need to sleep any longer, and carefully and respectfully moves in till he's seated next to Jesus, and our Lord turns to him knowing his thoughts (great storytelling by the movie's creators), "What do you want to know, a day without death." Clavius of all people certainly knew that better than everyone else already. What Jesus (I believe) was saying to him is, "What do you want to know _for yourself,_ a day without death?" We've been sold a lie, people don't die, only our bodies give out. Every person on this planet could lay down their body and no one would actually die. The trick would be hearing Bowie play and sing it without having to lay our body down. My ministry is Alyssa Michelle Soap, she's my Archangel, one of two, (Michelle Michael), the other is (Gabby/Gabriel).
Amazing!!
One of the most moving performances I've heard
Hi! Do you mind if I use the beginning part of this on a little animation I made? I'll make sure to credit you and link to this video. Your covers are great btw!
